A merge-field message looks like this: "Hi , we help businesses like grow." Swap the fields and the sentence is identical for every recipient. It reads as automated because, structurally, it is.
Actual personalization changes the content based on something specific to the recipient their product line, their apparent business size, the context of why you're reaching out to them specifically.
