How to connect WhatsApp to ChatGPT
A practical walkthrough of linking an existing WhatsApp number to ChatGPT what it takes, what you can do with it, and what it can't do.
Connecting WhatsApp to ChatGPT means giving ChatGPT a scoped way to interact with an authorized WhatsApp account reading chats, drafting replies, and (with WhatsApp AI Assistant) finding prospects and scheduling outreach without you leaving the ChatGPT conversation.
What you need
- An existing WhatsApp number (personal or small-business). No WhatsApp Business API application or approval process is required to get started.
- A phone to scan a QR code with, the same way you'd link WhatsApp Web.
- A ChatGPT account with the ability to add a connector (or Claude/Cursor, if you'd rather use those instead the same connection works with any MCP-compatible client).
The steps
- Connect your number. Scan the QR code from your WhatsApp AI Assistant dashboard. This links the session the same way WhatsApp Web does your phone stays the source of truth.
- Add the connector to ChatGPT. Point ChatGPT at your WhatsApp AI Assistant connection so it can call the available tools listing chats, reading messages, scheduling, and (on paid tiers) prospecting and personalized outreach.
- Try a scoped first request. Something like "list my unread chats" or "read the last 10 messages with [contact]" is a good first test it confirms the connection without doing anything irreversible.
- Move to something that sends a message. Ask ChatGPT to draft a reply or schedule a message. It will show you the draft before anything goes out nothing sends without your approval.
